When my husband and I started dating all those years ago, we never envisioned ourselves as megacity-dwellers, raising kids in a small apartment, not owning a car. But here we are.
Both having grown up in farm towns on the outskirts of the Chicago ‘burbs, this über urban stuff was never really our style. But fresh out of Peace Corps, we wanted to head somewhere new and this is where we landed. More than 6 years and 2 kids later, we’re starting to get the hang of it, though the lack of easily-accessible nature does really wear us down on occasion.
And that’s where we have Frederick Law Olmstead to thank.
Living within walking distance of one of the country’s best parks sort of makes up for it all. While we don’t have a backyard or any green space to call our own, this is the next best thing.
This weekend, we had some gorgeous weather, so we recruited a couple of friends and trekked up through the park to the Brooklyn Botantic Garden to bask in the cherry blossoms.
We donned our summer sandals, dressed all the ladies in airy skirts & comfy dresses, and had one of the best afternoons we’d had in ages. We ran like wild animals, we wiggled our toes in the grass and dug around in the dirt, we tumbled to the ground during raucous rounds of Ring Around the Rosy, and we breathed all that fresh air deep into our lungs while we laughed in the sunshine.
I guess this city stuff ain’t so bad, after all.
