Kickstarting our August adventures

August 6, 2012

We’re settling into our new digs fairly well, but if you look behind closed doors, things are still a mighty wreck (our office has quickly become a place to hide ugly exploding boxes — you can barely open the door to even peek inside. Eep!). It’s easy to get sucked into staying here all day working on things. Or, even worse, thinking about working on things even if you never actually empty a a single box and — whoops — there goes another beautiful summer day!

I’m determined not to waste any more of our summer days, however, as I remember what Chicago winters are like. (hint: Cold. And looooong.) So we’re taking some inspiration from Erin and creating a “To Do List” for the month of August. A summer bucket list of sorts.

I started to brainstorm on my own tonight, but I plan to sit down with P first thing in the morning and see what sort of things she’d like to do. There are the obvious ones — play in the yard, ride her Kick, go to the library — but I’m wondering if she’ll come up with anything more adventurous? If not, I’ve got a couple things in mind myself.

I’ll share our list once we have it finalized, but in the meantime — what would you put on it?

(Keep in mind I’m just one adult to two small children and we prefer stuff that is free, or at least cheap. We also have both a vehicle of our own and easy access to transit to Chicago and a taste for adventure!)

Riding the train isn’t free, but it’s not too expensive, either, for you and the two little ones.  Does Metra still do $5 weekend passes?  How would Penny like a train ride, just like Daddy does, and then maybe a bit of a walk to look at the lake?  If you go outside of rush hours you shouldn’t have any trouble with seating and the kids aren’t likely to bother anybody.  You can probably get the four-seat space.
It’s a little more ambitious than the library, but it might be worth it.  Of course, she’s a little more used to trains and such than ours were, but they always loved it.

The train downtown is on our list — we may go tomorrow to meet some online friends at Millennium Park :)

It’s not unlike grabbing the Q into Manhattan for lunch with T so it doesn’t feel terribly adventurous to me. On the Q I often didn’t get a seat at all (even with the two girls along), so the Metra can only be an improvement!
