We’re raising a bunch of progressive little New Yorkers over here. This one is constantly noshing on bagels. And has perfected her order at the coffee shop. “I want whole wheat bagel. Cream cheese, pease.” Toasted? “No. Cold, pease.” Next thing you know, she’ll be ordering coffee to go with it. Light and sweet. And this one? Well, we’re just getting started with her. Today, 50 days after the start of the Occupy Wall St. protest, our family finally made it over for a visit. We’ve been meaning to go for weeks, but each day we’ve planned a trip, something has come up. A couple of times it’s been personal things, but mostly it’s been protest-related things — the threatened park “clean-up,” scheduled marches, etc. And while we’ve considered going on those days anyway, we’ve been weary to risk going any time accidental arrest appeared possible what with the toddler and my pregnancy to consider. Yesterday was Election Day and I have a confession to make. Although I’m a politically-engaged 30 year old, this is the first time I’ve ever voted in a midterm election. In fact, this is only the third time I’ve ever voted. I didn’t even vote in last year’s Mayoral election. I was on maternity leave. I had time. But I also had an excuse in my wee little newborn and the cold, cold weather. Oh, boo freakin’ hoo. The three times I have voted? 2000 (Gore), 2008 (Obama), and yesterday.* And I can place almost all of yesterday’s motivation...
