Already the differences are stark.

The first time

  • Went totally cold turkey on all coffee and alcohol from the moment I got the positive pregnancy test through to the birth.
  • Once P was born, I continued to refrain from caffeine entirely for her first 6 months because I was worried about its effect on her via breastfeeding.
  • Had a sip of T-Bone’s beer here and there in first several months, but not until at least 2 or 3 months in. And very occasionally. Always worried about its presence in my milk, so I never enjoyed it.

The second time

  • Switched to decaf throughout first trimester. Once I hit that magic 12-13 weeks, switched back to caffeinated coffee, though limited myself to one cup a day, on the way to work. By the third trimester, I’d limited myself to two. Most days. Three at most, I swear!
  • Refrained from caffeine and alcohol for baby’s first 36 hours. Woke up on day 2 and brewed a small pot of half caff/half regular coffee. Drank just one cup. Day 3: went to KellyMom to see if I really had to refrain. KellyMom said “Most breastfeeding mothers can drink caffeine in moderation. Babies whose mothers avoided caffeine completely during pregnancy seem to react more to caffeine in mom’s diet.” Score. Brewed regular pot on third day. Drank only two cups. I swear.
  • Shared a beer with Tony on night 5. He drank most of it, but I thoroughly enjoyed every small sip I had. Mmm, beer.

Babywearing Love

If there was one thing that got us through early parenting with our toddler, it was babywearing. We still wear Poppy occasionally, though she much prefers to walk these days, so we were both really excited about getting back to the basics with Boo.

Lucky for us, she’s already proved to be a fan.

A Formal Introduction

The news is all over FacebookTwitter, and Tumblr already, but I figured I’d make it official here as well.

Boo has arrived!

Eleanor (Ella) Joy Warning Greep was born at home on Feb 7 at 10:07 p.m. after a 9 hour labor. She was welcomed to the world via water and the whole experience was just… wow. From start to finish. We’ll certainly be sharing a full birth story in the next couple of days, but, overall, her birth couldn’t have been more picture perfect. I can honestly say I actively enjoyed the entire experience and have never felt so present in a moment in all of my life. If I could guarantee that all future births would be like this one, I’d have 6 more kids.

That being said, the last 38 hours have been both joyous and exhausting. Life with a newborn is both sweet and tiring and all of our emotions have only been heightened by Poppy’s presence and our careful attention to her physical and emotional well-being along the way. These next weeks and months are going to be a crazy adventure, but although we’re expecting a fair share of difficulties along the way, we are so looking forward to them anyway.

Thanks to everyone for your love and well wishes since Tuesday night! We haven’t yet hosted any visitors, but we’ll start welcoming out-of-towners in about two weeks and are certainly open to anyone local now if you’d like to swing by and say hello! Just please bring food — it’s what we’re charging for admission :)
